Storms now battering Gaza have destroyed more than
70,000 displacement tents and makeshift shelters. Over 1.5 million Palestinians have been forced to live in displacement tents and makeshift shelters as a result of Israel’s campaign to destroy Gaza and make life unliveable. Flooding is now sweeping through Gaza’s forced displacement camps, leaving families with nowhere else to go, and water levels rising as much as 40cm due to Saturday’s rain.
2,000 buildings that had been damaged in previous Israeli attacks are also at imminent risk of collapse.
Israel continues to
block vital shelter materials from entering the Strip. Gaza Civil Defence estimates that at least 300,000 tents need to enter Gaza immediately to provide shelter. Municipal and Civil Defence officials cannot cope with the flooding due to enforced
fuel shortages and damage to essential equipment. Israel has systematically destroyed hundreds of vehicles, including bulldozers and vehicles used to pump water, through
Israel’s genocide campaign in Gaza.
Israel’s illegal military occupation of more than 60% of the Gaza Strip has forced over
400,000 Palestinians to live in areas highly vulnerable to further flooding, with a further 1 million people at risk of further displacement, as heavy rainfall continues to flood makeshift shelters, contaminate what little clean water is available and leave families exposed to illness from stagnant rainwater, sewage and unsanitary conditions.
“We have issued an urgent distress call to the international community and humanitarian organisations to intervene immediately to save hundreds of thousands of displaced people from the flooding of their tents.”- Palestinian Civil Defence spokesman Mahmoud Basal.
None of what we are seeing in Gaza is an accident. Israel continues to deliberately inflict conditions of life calculated to bring about the physical destruction of Palestinians, through the deprivation of food, water, medical care, shelter, and other essential aid. This is a tool of
genocide.
You must act and exert pressure to see justice. I call on you to:
- Impose full, comprehensive sanctions on Israel – not solely settlements.
- Enforce a complete two-way trade embargo, ending all import and export activity.
- Immediately end all arms sales and intelligence cooperation.
- Demand unimpeded access for aid and humanitarian organisations across Palestine.
- Demand an end to the illegal occupation.
